#5 Apple Intelligence

Slow and steady wins the race

Apple has finally joined the Generative AI (GenAI) race, with a host of exciting announcements made at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 held at the company’s headquarters in California. Although the conference is five days long, Apple kicks it off with keynote events each year. The tech giant is now directly integrating AI capabilities into its software. Here are some key takeaways:

  • ChatGPT’s integration into Siri (Apple’s voice assistant) and other writing apps such as Notes. This eliminates the need for creating an account to use ChatGPT. But, paid users can still login and access premium features.

  • iOS 18, iPhone’s software, has added the ability to schedule messages in its messaging app, iMessage. Moreover, the new software will also allow you to arrange apps on the home screen and customize widgets as well as lock and hide specific apps.

  • Tap to Cash allows you to tap two iPhones together to send and receive Apple Cash (a digital card that lets you send and receive money in Wallet and Messages)

  • Genmoji is a way to express how you feel in emojis. You can simply type in what you want the emoji to show and you will be met with possible options. Take creativity to the next level and roast your friends.

  • iPadOS 18 sees the introduction of a calculator app (yes, it wasn’t there before) and a feature called Math Notes, which will solve your questions in real time, when you write the problem using the Apple Pencil.

  • Interesting new features have also been added in the macOS Sequoia,  watchOS 2, and the visionOS 2.

But don’t get too excited, because Apple being Apple, these features are only available for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, and for those having iPads or MacBooks with chips M1 and above, leaving behind all others. This is because most of these features are hardware-dependent, and no updates can bring these capabilities to previous devices. Moreover, this could also potentially bump iPhone 16 sales when the same gets released.

While Apple has been slow to catch up, the tech giant has tapped into one big potential area that so far has been untapped: personalization. With these features, Apple has certainly utilized its powers well, taking user experience and data privacy to the next level, something that has always been at the heart of the company. However, the new features and their capabilities (and limitations) can only be tested when Apple rolls them out towards the end of the year.

Do you use Apple products? Is there any feature you’re particularly excited about?
